The food industry will try to set a sugar rate in Scotland, or face a sugar tax. The manufactures have 12 months to meet these new guidelines or come up with an alternative solutions to reduce sugar purchase levels. The Food Standards Agency (FFS) has advised retailers and manufactures to promote healthier products.

These guidelines could not come too soon as its predicted in the next 15 years 40 per cent of the Scottish population will be obese.

The sugar tax has worked in Mexico where a 10 per cent tax, has reduced the purchase of sugar based products by 12 per cent.

Reason to cut sugar out of your diet?

  • Reduce your body fat
  • Reduce chances of liver disease
  • Reduce the main cause for metabolic syndrome (diabetes, obesity and heart disease)
  • Cancer cell thrive on sugar
  • Excess sugar affect brain functioning, especially relating to appetite regulation and is shown to impair memory in rats.
